Unknown | 2:06 AM |

Verizon has started sending out the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) update for the Motorola Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX. In addition to other improvements, this also enables global roaming on those smartphones.
Android 4.0 on a Droid RAZRThe update makes the Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX the first Verizon 4G devices to be Global Ready. As such, customers with these devices will be able to have voice and data service in more than 220 countries, when subscribed to an international plan.
More about Android ICS
Android 4.0 features upgraded functionality and new features, such as Face Unlock. It also includes Direct Access Lock Screen, which allows users to easily open the camera, text messages, and dialer from the lock screen. In addition, the upgrade also enhances the voice input technology, typing words as the user speaks emails or texts.
We reported last month that Verizon smartphones would start seeing global capabilities. Expect to see more phones such as the Motorola Droid 4 or HTC Rezound to be Global Ready soon.

Those who want to manually upgrade their Droid RAZR series model can do so by going to Settings > About phone > System updates > Download. This will begin the process of downloading and installing the upgrade, which will go considerably faster on a Wi-Fi connection.
Verizon will be sending Android 4.0 to these models in the coming days.  Those who haven't manually upgraded will get a notice that it has already been downloaded and it ready to be installed.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The mishandling of Facebook's (FB.O) initial public offering in May has rattled the confidence of retail investors, who were already leery of financial markets following a string of crises over the past several years, Fred Tomczyk, chief executive of TD Ameritrade (AMTD.N), said on Thursday.
Trading glitches on Nasdaq OMX Group Inc's (NDAQ.O) exchange led to a 30-minute delay in Facebook's highly anticipated market debut on May 18, after which market makers - who facilitate trades for brokers - failed to receive confirmations of their opening orders for about two hours, leading to more than $100 million of losses.
In early trading on Thursday, shares were down 0.8 percent at $26.56, significantly lower than its $38 a share IPO pricing and the $42 it opened at on its debut trading day. The steep drop in the company's share price has triggered questions over its lofty IPO pricing.
Tomczyk said TD Ameritrade came out of the Facebook IPO "pretty clean" because the firm's market maker, which he would not name, covered the trades. However, he said the IPO was clearly mishandled.
"It's another one of those things that destroys confidence versus helping it," he said on the sidelines of Sandler O'Neill's brokerage and exchanges conference in New York.
As stocks began to recover following the financial crisis, the "flash crash" in May 2010, when $1 trillion in shareholder equity was temporarily wiped out in a matter of minutes, shook investor confidence in the equity markets, where trading is largely computer-driven.
Add to that the debt problems of the United States and ongoing fiscal crisis in Europe, and it's no wonder investors are cautious, Tomczyk said.
TD Ameritrade is the No. 1 U.S. retail brokerage by trading volumes and is often considered a proxy for retail investor sentiment.
The Omaha, Nebraska-based firm said on Thursday its daily average revenue trades in May were down around 4 percent from a year earlier, at 370,000. Tomczyk has said in the past that the firm would like to see average daily trading levels at around 400,000.
JMP Securities analyst David Trone said he was expecting 430,000 trades a day for the month.
"May's soft results follow April's disappointing number and with increasing macro uncertainty and the summer doldrums, we see little reason for activity to surge near-term," he said in a note to clients.
Nasdaq said on Wednesday it will offer $40 million in cash and rebates to clients harmed by its mishandling of Facebook's market debut.
The proposed compensation, subject to approval by regulators, was criticized by rival exchanges for its use of rebates, and by clients claiming losses far bigger than the amount offered by Nasdaq.
The top four market makers in the $16 billion Facebook IPO - UBS (UBSN.VX), Citigroup (C.N), Knight Capital (KCG.N), and Citadel Securities - together lost more than $115 million due to the technical problems, sources have told Reuters.

SEOUL | Fri Jun 15, 2012 12:18am EDT

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Display, a unit of Samsung Electronics Co, said four flat-screen production lines had stopped briefly on Thursday due to a power outage -- a development that may mean sizeable losses.

Although production was only halted for 10 minutes, even a short stop can render some panels obsolete.

"Samsung may have to report some costs, because around 70 percent of panels which were in the process of production during the blackout become useless," said an analyst who declined to be identified.

Shares in Samsung Electronics, tumbled 3 percent in morning trade, underperforming a 0.7 percent decline in the broader market.

Samsung, which competes with local rival LG Display and Japan's Sharp Corp, has since restored 60 percent of production and has said it expects the lines to return to full output later on Friday.

The lost output, mainly large-sized panels for TVs and computer monitors, is unlikely to have major impact on sales or global LCD market, where supplies are plentiful due to weak consumer demand.

The plant in Tangjeong, southwest of Seoul, houses Samsung's most advanced LCD production lines. The four lines have a combined monthly output capacity of 320,000 panels.

Its parent Samsung Electronics separated out its loss-making flat-screen business in April to combine it with a more promising AMOLED (active matrix organic light-emitting diodes) flat-screen operation, currently used mainly in high-end smartphones.

Apple Seeks to Block the Import of All HTC's Android Smartphones

Unknown | 10:36 PM |

Apple wants to prevent HTC from bringing any of its Android smartphones into the United States, claiming that they all violate one of its patents. HTC denies this.
HTC One XApple has asked the U.S. International Trade Commission to immediately block the import of no less than 29 models, claiming that they infringe on a patent held by the iPhone maker. This patent (U.S. Patent No. 5,946,647) covers the technology for automatically turning phone numbers and addresses embedded in the text of an email into links to apps for working with this data.
Last month, the U.S. Customs Dept. began holding shipments of the HTC One X and HTC Evo 4G LTE at the orders of the ITC, but released them after testing showed they didn't violate Apple's patent.
Apple disagrees, and has requested the ITC order the block to be resumed on these handsets, and added 27 extra. This includes HTC's entire One series, the Droid Incredible series, and many more. Handsets andinvolved are offered by AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint.
In response, HTC released the following statement: "The U.S. Customs office has reviewed and approved HTC devices for import into the U.S., as they are in compliance with the ITC's ruling."
