Motorola Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX Get Android 4.0, Global Roaming

Unknown | 2:06 AM |

Verizon has started sending out the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) update for the Motorola Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX. In addition to other improvements, this also enables global roaming on those smartphones.
Android 4.0 on a Droid RAZRThe update makes the Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX the first Verizon 4G devices to be Global Ready. As such, customers with these devices will be able to have voice and data service in more than 220 countries, when subscribed to an international plan.
More about Android ICS
Android 4.0 features upgraded functionality and new features, such as Face Unlock. It also includes Direct Access Lock Screen, which allows users to easily open the camera, text messages, and dialer from the lock screen. In addition, the upgrade also enhances the voice input technology, typing words as the user speaks emails or texts.
We reported last month that Verizon smartphones would start seeing global capabilities. Expect to see more phones such as the Motorola Droid 4 or HTC Rezound to be Global Ready soon.
Getting the Upgrade
Those who want to manually upgrade their Droid RAZR series model can do so by going to Settings > About phone > System updates > Download. This will begin the process of downloading and installing the upgrade, which will go considerably faster on a Wi-Fi connection.
Verizon will be sending Android 4.0 to these models in the coming days.  Those who haven't manually upgraded will get a notice that it has already been downloaded and it ready to be installed.

Facebook IPO mishandling hurt investor confidence: TD Ameritrade

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The mishandling of Facebook's (FB.O) initial public offering in May has rattled the confidence of retail investors, who were already leery of financial markets following a string of crises over the past several years, Fred Tomczyk, chief executive of TD Ameritrade (AMTD.N), said on Thursday.
Trading glitches on Nasdaq OMX Group Inc's (NDAQ.O) exchange led to a 30-minute delay in Facebook's highly anticipated market debut on May 18, after which market makers - who facilitate trades for brokers - failed to receive confirmations of their opening orders for about two hours, leading to more than $100 million of losses.
In early trading on Thursday, shares were down 0.8 percent at $26.56, significantly lower than its $38 a share IPO pricing and the $42 it opened at on its debut trading day. The steep drop in the company's share price has triggered questions over its lofty IPO pricing.
Tomczyk said TD Ameritrade came out of the Facebook IPO "pretty clean" because the firm's market maker, which he would not name, covered the trades. However, he said the IPO was clearly mishandled.
"It's another one of those things that destroys confidence versus helping it," he said on the sidelines of Sandler O'Neill's brokerage and exchanges conference in New York.
As stocks began to recover following the financial crisis, the "flash crash" in May 2010, when $1 trillion in shareholder equity was temporarily wiped out in a matter of minutes, shook investor confidence in the equity markets, where trading is largely computer-driven.
Add to that the debt problems of the United States and ongoing fiscal crisis in Europe, and it's no wonder investors are cautious, Tomczyk said.
TD Ameritrade is the No. 1 U.S. retail brokerage by trading volumes and is often considered a proxy for retail investor sentiment.
The Omaha, Nebraska-based firm said on Thursday its daily average revenue trades in May were down around 4 percent from a year earlier, at 370,000. Tomczyk has said in the past that the firm would like to see average daily trading levels at around 400,000.
JMP Securities analyst David Trone said he was expecting 430,000 trades a day for the month.
"May's soft results follow April's disappointing number and with increasing macro uncertainty and the summer doldrums, we see little reason for activity to surge near-term," he said in a note to clients.
Nasdaq said on Wednesday it will offer $40 million in cash and rebates to clients harmed by its mishandling of Facebook's market debut.
The proposed compensation, subject to approval by regulators, was criticized by rival exchanges for its use of rebates, and by clients claiming losses far bigger than the amount offered by Nasdaq.
The top four market makers in the $16 billion Facebook IPO - UBS (UBSN.VX), Citigroup (C.N), Knight Capital (KCG.N), and Citadel Securities - together lost more than $115 million due to the technical problems, sources have told Reuters.

SEOUL | Fri Jun 15, 2012 12:18am EDT

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Display, a unit of Samsung Electronics Co, said four flat-screen production lines had stopped briefly on Thursday due to a power outage -- a development that may mean sizeable losses.

Although production was only halted for 10 minutes, even a short stop can render some panels obsolete.

"Samsung may have to report some costs, because around 70 percent of panels which were in the process of production during the blackout become useless," said an analyst who declined to be identified.

Shares in Samsung Electronics, tumbled 3 percent in morning trade, underperforming a 0.7 percent decline in the broader market.

Samsung, which competes with local rival LG Display and Japan's Sharp Corp, has since restored 60 percent of production and has said it expects the lines to return to full output later on Friday.

The lost output, mainly large-sized panels for TVs and computer monitors, is unlikely to have major impact on sales or global LCD market, where supplies are plentiful due to weak consumer demand.

The plant in Tangjeong, southwest of Seoul, houses Samsung's most advanced LCD production lines. The four lines have a combined monthly output capacity of 320,000 panels.

Its parent Samsung Electronics separated out its loss-making flat-screen business in April to combine it with a more promising AMOLED (active matrix organic light-emitting diodes) flat-screen operation, currently used mainly in high-end smartphones.

Apple Seeks to Block the Import of All HTC's Android Smartphones

Unknown | 10:36 PM |

Apple wants to prevent HTC from bringing any of its Android smartphones into the United States, claiming that they all violate one of its patents. HTC denies this.
HTC One XApple has asked the U.S. International Trade Commission to immediately block the import of no less than 29 models, claiming that they infringe on a patent held by the iPhone maker. This patent (U.S. Patent No. 5,946,647) covers the technology for automatically turning phone numbers and addresses embedded in the text of an email into links to apps for working with this data.
Last month, the U.S. Customs Dept. began holding shipments of the HTC One X and HTC Evo 4G LTE at the orders of the ITC, but released them after testing showed they didn't violate Apple's patent.
Apple disagrees, and has requested the ITC order the block to be resumed on these handsets, and added 27 extra. This includes HTC's entire One series, the Droid Incredible series, and many more. Handsets andinvolved are offered by AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint.
In response, HTC released the following statement: "The U.S. Customs office has reviewed and approved HTC devices for import into the U.S., as they are in compliance with the ITC's ruling."

Sign up with several survey sites=The more survey sites you sign up with, the more survey requests you’ll receive in your email and more opportunity you’ll have to make money.Any individual survey site may only send a couple of surveys to you in a given month. The more companies you sign up with, the more surveys you'll receive.

Samsung scores a hat-trick in Mobile Industry Awards.

Unknown | 1:41 AM |

The Korean company was voted Best Manufacturer and its record-breaking Galaxy S II smartphone took home the Phone of the Year prize. Simon Stanford, VP for Samsung’s UK & Ireland telecommunications and networks division, walked away with the coveted Person of the Year award for his highly-praised work in establishing the manufacturer as a powerful player in the UK.
Samsung scores a hat-trick in Mobile Industry AwardsAt a glittering ceremony in The Brewery in central London last night (14 June), Samsung picked up the top accolade for device makers. The judging panel, which comprised top executives from across the mobile industry, felt Samsung had tremendous strength in depth in its device portfolio, a desire to win unmatched by rivals, and the best marketing in the business.
The Galaxy S II was a central plank in Samsung’s success during the past 12 months, so it came as no surprise that it won the Phone of the Year prize. The handset was one of the year’s bestsellers and the speed at which it captured the public imagination caught the judges’ eye.
Samsung’s UK chief Simon Stanford was a popular choice for the Person of the Year award, with key trade figures praising his skill, enthusiasm, dedication and flexibility in leading his company’s charge.
O2 won Best Network, with the operator applauded for its innovative range of services, from Priority Moments to the O2 Wallet, and quirky and idiosyncratic approach to marketing.
After narrowly missing out on the top prize in 2011, Phones 4u took home the Best High Street Retailer award this year. The company was lauded by the judges for its freshness and reinvention away from its old sales model. Manufacturers saw Phones 4u as the place to go if you wanted to make a splash with your latest handset. Nicola Black, from the retailer’s Stirling branch, won this year’s Shop Idol, Mobile’s annual search for the best sales person in the UK.
Taiwanese manufacturer HTC claimed two prizes on the night: Hottest New Phone for 2012 for the One X and Best Field Marketing Team. The judges agreed the One X was a fantastic device that generated a great deal of public excitement. The company also walked away with the Best Field Marketing Team award for the second year running, with the panel impressed by how HTC’s team went about its business with a quiet efficiency.
A career built on consistency and success was rewarded when Uplands took home the Best Dealer prize. Avenir Telecom did the double, clinching Best Accessories and Best Airtime Distributor. In a year when it stunned competitors by winning the Nokia supply contract, Micro-P walked away with the Best Hardware Distributor award.
With a proposition heavy in innovation and invention, giffgaff was voted Best MVNO by the judges. Operator Three claimed the Best Mobile Broadband prize, while Apple won again in the Hottest Tablet Device award category, with the new iPad clinching this year’s prize.
Mobile editor Shujaul Azam said: ‘These awards recognise excellence and celebrate an industry which is the pride of the business world, with its innovation, business acumen and quick thinking. What the Mobile Industry Awards has done is truly reward the best in class. It was a great night and congratulations to all those shortlisted and the winners.’

PARIS (Reuters) - Nokia plans to cut 10,000 more jobs, bringing the total to one in three staff, as it loses market share to cellphone rivals Apple and Samsung and burns through cash, raising new fears over its future.
In a second profit warning in nine weeks, Nokia said on Thursday that its phone business would post a deeper-than-expected loss in the second quarter due to tougher competition, which it expected to continue.
Once the world's dominant mobile phone provider, Nokia was wrongfooted by the rise of smartphones and is struggling to keep up with Apple, Samsung and Google. It is also losing market share in cheaper, more basic phones.
Chief Executive Stephen Elop is placing hopes of a turnaround on a new range of smartphones called Lumia, which use largely untried Microsoft Corp software. But Lumia sales have so far been slow, exasperating investors who have seen its stock crash more than 70 percent since it announced the software switch in February 2011.
"The job cuts and profit warning underline the seriousness of the challenges Nokia is facing, particularly in light of the eye-watering competition from Apple and Samsung," said Ben Wood, head of research at CCS Insight.
Nokia, whose cash position is increasingly scrutinized by investors, also said restructuring-related cash outflows would be around 650 million euros in the remaining three quarters of 2012 and around 600 million in 2013.
With the cost of Nokia's debt rising, the most bearish of analysts in a Reuters poll last month said the company could even be at risk of default if it fails to slow its cash burn.
Over the past five quarters, the onetime darling of mobile telcoms has eroded its cash pile by 2.1 billion euros - a rate that would wipe out its entire 4.9 billion reserves in a couple of years.
Analysts at JP Morgan said on Thursday they expect operating losses, combined with restructuring outflows, to leave Nokia with 1.63 billion euros cash at the end of next year.
"This is not a comfort zone for a company as large as Nokia," the analysts said.
Nokia's five-year credit default swaps (CDS) were at a new all-time high of 933 basis points on Thursday according to Markit. This means it costs $933,000 annually to buy $10 million of protection against a Nokia default using a five-year CDS contract and implies a default probability of 55 percent.
Bernstein analyst Pierre Ferragu said he expects the company to have minimal net cash position at the end of its restructuring.
"We therefore see continued potential downside to the recent stock price and maintain our underperform rating," Ferragu said.
Shares in Nokia were down 16 percent to 1.87 euros, below the psychologically important 2 euros mark, not seen since 1996.
Analysts have said that even with the dramatic fall in the share price, the worsening outlook made it hard to judge how much lower the shares could go.
"I won't comment on the stock price anymore, since it's been seen over and over, that there is no definitive bottom," said Evli analyst Mikko Ervasti.
"People are worried over Lumia sales. I think expectations for the third quarter will be cut," said Nordea analyst Sami Sarkamies.
The 10,000 job cuts, which include the closure of Nokia's only plant in its homeland Finland, bring total planned cuts at the group since Elop took over as chief executive in 2010 to more than 40,000 staff, or every third worker.
Of the latest job cuts, 3,700 will take place in Finland, where the firm will also close its plant in Salo - the last major cellphone manufacturing site in western Europe, the cradle of the global industry.
"This is a major blow. This is due to the operational mistakes made already during the previous CEOs. Maybe the signs of success are running low for Elop too," said Antti Rinne, chairman of labor union Pro.
Nokia said it expects its operating margin in the second quarter to be below the negative 3 percent level reported in the first quarter due to pressure on its smartphone business. It previously forecast it would be similar to or below that level.
On average analysts forecast the second-quarter phone unit margin to be at -4.6 percent, narrowing to -2.2 percent in the third quarter.
Nokia also said it would sell luxury phone business Vertu to venture firm EQT and revamp its management team. ($1 = 0.7953 euros)
